The Region 2 Southside Computer Club held a meeting September 16th with Al Cheeks presenting  “Attractive Alternatives to Microsoft Office”.  Al introduced several alternative office suites that provide the same MS Office program feel, functionality, and file compatibility, which are available no cost to users. The primary focus for this meeting was on their word processing capabilities, which was impressive. For those looking to upgrade from an old Microsoft Office program his presentation demonstrated several choices to address users’ needs.  The Club’s Steering Committee held a meeting September 30th.  Planning details were reviewed for the 30-year celebration and Christmas party to be held on December 16th.  Club meeting agendas and presentation topics were established and planned for upcoming meetings through May 5, 2015.  On October 7th Tim Kekeis gave a presentation on the “LastPass” password manager program.  This program is used to secure and manage your passwords, and is available whenever you need to login, generate a password, or complete an online order.

The Region 3’s Access SIG. did not hold an October meeting prior to the Board Meeting.  The Digital SIGs meeting scheduled for September 17th was cancelled, and the Westside Computer Club’s Oct. 2nd meeting was canceled due to the 30th Anniversary party held on Oct 4.

The Region 5 North West Club held a meeting September 18th with Edward Keating, NCC Coordinator, providing the presentation  “Speeding up your computer”, an updated presentation to cover additional items for Win7/8/8.1. The Computing Tips/Fixes Special Interest Group held a meeting October 6th with Coordinator William Zeigler presiding.  Member Mark Fastert researched Cloud Storage and updated the audience to the current state of the technology.  Other activities were (1): looking at an online backup/restore solution and demonstrating a bit of a Crash Plan; (2): Looking at recent announcement of Windows 10  that bypasses Win 9; and (3):The Coordinator relayed a recent experience of a bald and bold ransom for encrypted data driven by opening a ‘UPS’ attachment.
