Re. FYI#1132  (Thurs 1/4/2018):

Serial Swatter “SWAuTistic” Bragged He Hit 100 Schools, 10 Homes

We should not be publicizing criminals like this. This only serves to give them exactly what they want -- notoriety.

Use Fake Answers to Online Security Questions

Not a good practice if you can't remember your lies. I do use a fake answer on my online banking website, because all their other choices are info which can be looked up online easily. Finding three non-public Q&As can be challenging these days.

How to use Robocopy multi-threaded feature to speed up file copy on Windows 10

When you have to copy a large number of files to another drive, Robocopy can significantly speed the process with its multi-threaded feature — Here's how to use it.

I haven't had to use Robocopy or Teracopy since Windows 7. My PCs (even my tablet) have been fast enough to copy my entire collections of personal data (sans media downloads) from on drive or partition to another without third party tools.

Security flaws put virtually all phones, computers at risk

This is not the best reference article on these newly posted flaws.

See https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/CCSWestSide/conversations/messages/4058

which is my reply to Sanford's posting about these flaws. I included references and advice.

Spectre? Meltdown? F*CKWIT? Calm down and make yourself some tea

Don’t panic, drink tea, patch early.

Exactly, Graham, exactly. Don't panic. Wait for the hardware and OS makers to come up with solutions which will have the least possible impact on system performance.

Why Android Phones Slow Down Over Time, and How to Speed Them Up

I haven't had this issue with my smartphone, but the article has some good advice.

Help Me Tom’s Guide: How Do I Stream Wirelessly from PC to TV?

Miracast does not work on Android 7.0 and upward. And it doesn't always work with tablets and smaller PCs. My NUC does Miracast with ScreenBeam Mini2, and so does my tablet. But the older ScreenBeam needed a Beta firmware update to work with the tablet after recent MS Updates. I'm still working on getting my new Chromecast set up with my phone. This is critical for using a Chromebook to connect to displays like my TV. In meeting room situations, wireless HDMI might be a better (but much more expensive) choice, as the public WiFi network may not want to let a Chromecast device connect.

Windows 10 emergency update KB4056892 (build 16299.192) releases

and  The F*CKWIT Intel chip flaw. Ready yourself for patches

When the chips are down…

and  Microsoft issues emergency Windows update for processor security bugs

Microsoft issues security update to mitigate security vulnerabilities on Intel, AMD, and ARM processors that can put millions of computers at risk.

Advice is not to apply this patch yet, until firmware updates are available for your devices.

Intel Misled Industry on Security Vulnerabilities

That's neither here nor there at this point. Millions (billions?) of devices need fixes -- soon.

So You Just Got a Chromecast. Now What?

I'm going to try the Ethernet Adapter for Chrome. With local tax and shipping, it's around $19.00. But it may actually simplify things over my Comcast network. Don't know about public WiFi connections -- probably not available most places.

Re-register Store app in Windows 10

I've had to do this, especially on my tablet, a nuber of times for various reasons. After Feature Updates, this is pretty much always on the to-do list.

Comments by -- Bob Primak --

Re. FYI#1123 (Tues 12/26/2017):

How to Disable Power Throttling in Windows 10

If you don't realize this is happening, you might think you have a "slow PC" and get hosed by a repair shop.

How and where to replace your old, depreciated iPhone battery

If your battery is down to 50 percent of its former runtime, with the same power saving settings, it's time to replace it. iPhone batteries are designed with a two-year lifespan in mind. Any longer and the risk of overheating and fire or explosion mounts dramatically. Many battery fires happen while the device is charging overnight, often at your bedside while you are asleep. Think about this. It's not an expensive fix and can be done in minutes at an Apple authorized reseller.

Why 4K isn't enough: The case for higher resolutions

At 12 feet and a screen size under 60 inches, even 4k resolution is beyond the capacity of human vision to see. Let's be straight on the facts here! HDR on the other hand, does affect things we actually can see, and it's cheaper to implement, can be used on any size screen, and takes up far less bandwidth. The "technical case" is totally bogus as far as I know.

DuckDuckGo: The privacy-conscious search engine taking the fight to Google by NOT tracking you

There have been claims that DuckDuckGo actually does track users.

Bypass paywalls with Anti-Paywall for Firefox and Chrome

Please do not post links to articles which demonstrate how to get away with criminal conduct. A copy of bits is a copy under US and EU laws, so this is in fact theft of paid content. If caught with downloads on a device or storage media, the device can be seized as evidence and the resulting lawsuit by the copyright holder could easily bankrupt you. There are sniffers out there which can detect copyrighted content, especially if you are foolish enough to post the pirated content.

6 of the Best Kodi Alternatives You Should Check Out

Plex is a Kodi alternative, but it tends to veer toward paid apps and a paid Plex Pass. It is however, the preferred interface for devices like the SiliconDust HomeRunHD.

Protect Yourself from Surveillance with Guardlock

This is an ad, not a story or a review. I'd need to see the results of realistic testing to see how effective this app really is.

One Senator makes a good case for breaking up Comcast-NBC

This isn't going to happen, any more than breaking up Microsoft will happen, or breaking up ABC-Disney or Sony-Viacom-CBS. You can't reverse history this way.

Windows 10 included password manager with huge security hole

It's not like Ubuntu Linux with its own repository hasn't been hosting older, insecure versions of its apps either. The GNOME Software repository also has old, insecure versions of some apps.

Facebook allows employers to target job ads based on age, and that might be illegal

Facebook is in the wrong. Period. And not the first time. It still hosts discriminatory housing ads.

Asus Chromebook Flip C101 review:

If I were going for a Chromebook, I would go for one that can take on Linux, especially in light of the upcoming Fuchsia Operating System, which may render pure ChromeOS devices obsolete. Linux doesn't install or play as well on ARM chipsets as on Intel chipsets.

HOW TO MAKE WINDOWS 10 LOOK LIKE WINDOWS 7

Another suggestion for people who can't stand the Widnows 10 interface -- isntall Linux, weither Mint or ElementaryOS.

Re. FYI#1123 (Tues 12/26/2017):

Why 4K isn't enough: The case for higher resolutions

Given that the human eye on a screen size of 60 inches or smaller at a distance of 12 feet can't even resolve 4k, I see no reason why most folks would ever want higher resolutions. What makes a picture look sharper and brighter is the color dynamic range, known as HDR. That's cheaper to add, and can be added to and appreciated on screens much smaller than 60 inches. And its content at 4k takes much less bandwidth than 8k HD video. Fewer latency issues when streaming, too.

DuckDuckGo: The privacy-conscious search engine taking the fight to Google by NOT tracking you

There have been reports that DuckduckGo does track and retain user information.

Bypass paywalls with Anti-Paywall for Firefox and Chrome

Please don't post links to articles which promote criminal conduct. Using this add-on is criminal theft of content. Digital bits are considered copies under US and EU laws. No arguments can prevent your PC from being seized and you from being sued if pirated copyrighted content is found on your PC or in your online accounts.

Amazon faces record fine from French fraud watchdog

While there are numerous reports of Amazon being unfair to sellers in their Marketplace, there are also reports of sellers behaving very badly and offering knockoff merchandise, some of it aoutright fraudulent in its own right. Amazon needs to simply kill off the Marketplace, since they don't seem to be able to police the sellers, and the sellers complain and do this kind of legal posturing every time they get caught doing fraudulent things to their customers. All of this Marketplace fraud does not reflect well on Amazon's reputation.

I just this week got burned by an Amazon Marketplace company whose product was not what they advertised. And this was Fulfilled By Amazon. There was even a FYI link to an article advertising this product. It's the Anycast dongle, and it's ancient Miracast tech which no longer works in Windows 10, does not support the Chrome Browser's Cast feature, and does not work with recent Android phones. It has no Chromecast features whatsoever, though it does support older Apple Airplay hubs. My return and refund are pending. I went out to Best Buy and bought a real Chromecast the same evening I dropped off my return at the UPS Store in Waltham, MA.

Windows 10’s face authentication defeated with a picture

Frankly, I don't know many people who keep IR photos of themselves lying around or posted online. IR cameras aren't cheap either.

Fujitsu equals quality and performance

It would have been nice if this were a US article, not an ad placed in an Australian online publication. US prices and availability are nowhere to be found.

Monitor web pages for changes

These types of extensions must be retaining browsing data. This leads to the possibility they are tracking you. One comment implied these extensions may not be free to use, but I can't verify that.

Protect Yourself from Surveillance with Guardlock

Cell phone calls are protected under the same laws which cover land line wiretapping. Unless you've attracted the attention of law enforcement or intelligence agencies, you don't need these protections. Ordinary hackers do not have access to cell phone frequencies.

One Senator makes a good case for breaking up Comcast-NBC

NBC-Universal-Comcast has no more leverage than Sony-Viacom-CBS or Disney-ABC (which also has a stake in Yahoo). The distinction is not a difference.

Windows 10 included password manager with huge security hole

It's not just Windows which has held in its repository old, insecure apps. Ubuntu Linux has done the same in its Software Center for years, and even the GNOME Software repository isn't all that up to date. I go outside of these sources when looking for the latest versions of my apps.

Facebook allows employers to target job ads based on age, and that might be illegal

This isn't the only discriminatory practice Facebook has been caught harboring and abetting. Discriminatory housing ads still find their way onto the site, being shown only to a targeted, select group of users. And men and women can easily be shown different ads.

Asus Chromebook Flip C101 review:

This looks pretty good for its size and price, but I'll want to put Linux onto my Chromebook, so I'd be inclined to go for an Intel-based model like the Flip C302.

HOW TO MAKE WINDOWS 10 LOOK LIKE WINDOWS 7

For that matter, you can make Linux resemble Windows 7. But it's not Windows 7, and neither is Windows 10.

Re FYI#1124 (Wed 12/27/2017):

The Best Linux Software

A lot of good stuff in there, some of which I hadn't heard of before. But some of the titles are dated or have problems with more recent Ubuntu versions.

How Do I Change the DNS Used By My Computer?

In Linux, which I use every day, I've tired about four or five different DNS services for various reasons. Not much changes that I see, but changing away from my ISP's default DNS has always improved performance, and some DNS services can enhance privacy or security a bit.

Google Chrome beta delivers mute tool for autoplay videos

I've done all kinds of things to mute or stop autoplaying videos. Nothing works 100 percent of the time, but these sorts of tips do help refine my techniques.

How to enable Strict site isolation mode in Google Chrome

I've implemented this in Chrome 64 Beta in Linux. I really haven't noticed any significant impact on what loads, how it behaves or speed. So I count this as a low-impact precaution.

A Ryzen-based HP Envy x360 is $575 right now

Maybe right before Christmas, but not any longer. The price is back up to its original level. This has a hard drive, which I don't like in mobile devices. I go with SSD when possible.

Eve V has the chops to battle the Microsoft Surface Pro

Sales have been closed for months.

Facebook tackles the question of whether social media is bad for us

Anything can be overused or misused to create a cocoon of reality distortion. The question about social media is, is it addictive? If so, it may need to be regulated.

Create custom wallpaper slideshows in GNOME

I placed slideshows on my Windows tablet to entertain audiences during presentations. Otherwise, they're just distracting and waste battery life. In Linux I don't like or need such distractions. Heck, right now I can't even see my Ubuntu desktop with all these open windows!

Apple Wants to Combine Mac and iOS Apps. Can it Succeed Where Microsoft Failed?

Not with me, and not with businesses, they can't. I have a Linux option. What do businesses have?

Google attacks Android fragmentation, pushes use of newer API, OS versions

This does nothing to force vendors to upgrade existing devices.

A single $23 device lets you stream 1080p video from any iPhone or Android to your TV

This is a cheap knockoff of the Microsoft Miracast dongle, with Apple (old style) Airplay compatibility. It didn't work on my devices consistently. My phone (Android 7.0) can't use it, as it has no Google Cast compatibility.  I returned the Anycast I ordered through Amazon, and went to Best Buy and bought a genuine Chromecast (non-4k model). That should work (if I can connect it to my Comcast XFinity network) with all my devices which have the Chrome Browser installed. The phone doesn't need a browser -- it does Google Cast natively.

Edward Snowden unveils phone app, Haven, to spy on spies

Interesting concept -- I wonder how well it really works?

Re. FYI#1124 (Wed 12/27/2017):

The Best Linux Software

Some of these titles are out of date and have more modern replacements. But by and large, I like what these guys are recommending, and I use or have used many of these applications in Ubuntu linux. I don't recall seeing XnViewMP fro Irfanview-like image handling, or MasterPDF4 for PDf handling. While you have to pay for legitimate use of it, VueScan is working with my wireless scanner, while XSANE has not been working. I also use VnStat (Command Line) for monitoring my network bandwidth usage. I also use nmcli (network monitor, CLI) to see the WiFi conditions around my apartment under Linux. It isn't a pretty interface like various Windows tools (especially Acrylic WiFi) but it shows who's doing what on which channels and in which bands, often identifying SSIDs and IDs of devices. This helps when dealing with neighbors and their connected things. (Also helpful was a low-pass LTE filter added to the TiVo's back end coax connector. It turns out that this type of filter -- $25.00 cost -- cleans up a lot of OTA reception issues around here, including household electric, microwave and nearby WiFi. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JGSC5AO/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )

BUFFERBLOAT: FIX YOUR SLOW NETWORK

I ran all the recommended tests, and found that this is not a serious issue on my Comcast XFinity home network.

Dual-screen clamshell devices will kill the tablet

This is far from the reality now. Desktop Applications are still painfully slow if they can be run at all on phones. This is not going to change. True productivity work will never be possible without a real computer. And the tech just to connect to an external monitor and mouse and keyboard is far from perfected.

Re. FYI #1125  (Thurs 12/28/2017):

Everyone hates cable TV, not just young people

I haven't been using the cable channels on my system for months now, so I can't say I hate Cable, only that I am not getting much value out of the programming lately.

Microsoft removes HEVC codec in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, adds it to Store

This is a format I haven't run across yet. The move to the Store means Microsoft doesn't own rights to the codec. It's still free to install.

Thousands of major sites are taking silent anti-ad-blocking measures

This has not been a huge issue for me yet. It seems I mostly access sites which don't seem to care much. Disabling a few add-ons is inconvenient, but for sites which I know to be safe and hich are frequently useful, I'm sometimes willing to suspend the ad blockers.

Re FYI#1126  (Fri 12/29/2017):

Essential Apps You Should Install on a New PC Running Windows or macOS

I still find third-party apps best for handling PDF files and scans. F.lux has been superseded by Night Light which is part of the Windows 10 OS since the Spring Creators Update (version 1703).

Re FYI#1127  (Sat 12/30/2017):

Apple Cuts Battery Replacement Costs, But Won’t Stop Throttling iPhone Performance

They can't exactly admit that the batteries wear out prematurely and thus get much shorter runtimes within a year or two, can they? That would be bad for sales.

(Hint: uninstall Windows and install Linux. That will immediately save you 40% to 60% of your disk space. And most Linux distros won't bloat up after you install and run them, even for years.)

Add or Update Security Questions for Local Account in Windows 10

Well, this is new. Now my local accounts can be as annoying to log into as my online personal banking account. But with no good reason, as it's not a Cloud Account. Dozens of people can't connect to my local account in an hour and try to impersonate me. My PCs are not "always connected". And if they were, I'd be using only hardened Linux for sure.

The only thing Apple is guilty of is not being clear with customers as to why the phones were being slowed down, and how to counteract the effect, at the cost of revealing just how much wear an iPhone puts on its battery in just one year.

What to Do When Windows Explorer Crashes in Windows 10

I've had this happen a few times lately. One issue is with Windows Shell options in Context Menus. Those need to be curated and culled periodically. The other time was when the screen resolution kept being changed as I was testing the Anycast Miracast Dongle. (It failed most of my tests.) The three-finger salute followed by selecting Task Manager will usually iun-crash Windows Explorer, but sometimes logging out and in again is necessary.

Massive Intel CPU Bug Leaves Kernel Vulnerable, Slows Performance: Report

The actual performance hit will vary, but it will be felt, even in my speedy NUC. What effect this may have on my already-slow Atom powered ASUS tabelt remains to be seen. If I go with an Intel Chromebook, this may also affect any Linux distro I put in there, but ChromeOS should remain pretty much the same due to its already light loads on Intel processors. I'll be looking for anything which indicates my Linux is getting the patch in my NUC. It is better to be safe than sorry in these types of situations. It turns out ARM processors are also potentially affected, and these are mostly non-Intel. Intel based Macs are also affected, though Apple claims it already has a patch. This is not something to do right away, and there will also be a new firmware patch (new BIOS Update) soon.

Apple apologizes for iPhone slowdown drama, will offer $29 battery replacements for a year

https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/28/16827248/apple-iphone-battery-replacement-price-slow-down-apology

Batteries are “consumable components” now

Here's exactly how your iPhone gets slower when you have an old battery — and how to replace it (AAPL)

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/apos-exactly-iphone-gets-slower-144215802.html

Why the $29 iPhone battery replacement is Apple's best move of the year

https://www.macworld.com/article/3245067/consumer-electronics/apple-iphone-battery-replacement-program.html

Apple is finally taking iPhone battery life seriously.

This isn't really about battery life per se. It's more about battery wear. Smaller dimension batteries and thinner profile batteries, tend to experience battery wear, or a decline in battery life, over a shorter time span than their bigger, thicker cousins. Newer batteries have different components to reduce this effect, but iPhones and most mobile devices can't really overcome the problem. So it is proper to label these batteries as consumable, and to make them replaceable.

I wish my tablet battery (a ribbon type) were replaceable, but at this point, the whole tablet is obsolete hardware, so it may not have Windows support much longer, and there's no option to convert it to Linux that I know of. I'm looking at a Chromebook replacement, but with Linux added to it, some add-ons will be needed. These are available, but require some further research and pricing before I buy what I will probably want.

Will Google kill Chrome OS and Android in 2018?

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3245032/android/will-google-kill-chrome-os-and-android-in-2018.html

This is the time of year when tech writers like to speculate and frankly just make things up, about what's to come during the year ahead. Fuchsia (people will have a hard time learning to spell this, let alone adapt to using it!) would do to Android and especially ChromeOS devices, what Widnows 10S is doing to Windows users, especially desktop Windows users -- driving us to Linux on compatible devices, and giving away or trashing non-convertible devices. So my idea of forcing Ubuntu onto an Intel-based Chromebook using Crouton is looking more like a pilot project than a crazy scheme which very few other people would ever want to try. Fuchsia would be able to run on a huge range of hardware, some of which could be made as Linux-unfriendly as a WindowsRT netbook, so one must choose hardware specs and read reviews very carefully. And relax, the "convergence" is as likely to happen in 2018 as physics (or Ubuntu Linux!) is likely to perfect its Grand Unification Theory in 2018. It *could* happen, but "Tain't likely, McGee, tain't likely!".
