Re. FYI#1151 (Tues 1/23/2018):

Do you prefer DuckDuckGo over Google search?

If I really felt privacy trumps convenience, I'd be full-time with something like DuckDuckGo. But as things are now, I use Google Search and many other Google services.

How to Prevent a User from Using All the Hard Drive Space in Windows

My solution-- have a big enough hard drive or SSD in the first place.

Top Free Antivirus Apps Without Nag Screens and Bloatware

Avira Free does have popup nags, and it pushes premium and bloatware services in its user interface. But two things are really annoying about this free AV product: (1) its scans, especially full file system scans, are very slow compared with anything else out there. (2) Like Malwarebytes Free, Reports and Details of updates and status are being removed from the user interface. Getting at these reports in Avira is still possible by making a shortcut (mine is on my Windows 10 taskbar) to the Old Style Interface, buried within the Programs directory under Avira. From this interface all the reports are still available -- at least for now. Malwarebytes Free makes you actually do some archaeology inside its ProgramData (Malwarebytes Service) to get logs and status reports. And with any of these AV producst, reports may get cleaned out and no longer be available after Disk Cleanup or CCleaner operations. (Glary Utilities usually leaves AV logs alone.) My other free Windows AV scanner right now is Emsisoft Emergency Kit, with Microsoft Safety Scanner (the one which operates within Windows) rounding out the defenses. I place little trust in most other free products, although BitDefender has a good reputation and good independent testing scores, and Panda isn't as bad as relying solely on Windows Defender, even with its recent upgrades. How effective Malwarebytes really is cannot be determined without independent test results, which the Company refuses to participate in for some reason. Immunet is a bad joke. Period. Sophos Home has a decent reputation and test results, but is not as feature rich or as pretty as some of the others. Which may be an advantage these days. I agree with leaving Avast and AVG out in the cold, given their excessive bloatware and push-popups lately.

Motherboard Vendors Release BIOS Updates For Spectre (Updated)

This is going to be an ongoing issue for a long time, so sit back, relax and research possible side effects before jumping on the latest firmware updates. That goes for your operating system too, but you should get all web browsers and other connected apps updated ASAP. (This will mitigate the javascript attack vectors, which are actively out in the wild already.)

Microsoft doubles down on its low-priced Chromebook competition for schools

The problem is, these all run Windows 10S, which is a total vendor lock-in. If the MS Store Apps were any good I could tolerate this change, but I don't see the appeal of the Store Apps as they are now.

New Android Malware Most Powerful Yet

Another perspective on this:

Skygofree: More Android malware malarkey

5 Alternative New Browsers to Replace Chrome

If privacy is a concern, I can see using Firefox but otherwise, these browsers require changes in how we use web browsers. I am not interested in making changes in how I do my browsing unless there's some serious benefit to doing so.

VPNBook is a free VPN Server and a Web Proxy you should be using

See this review:

Detailed expert review of VPNBook

https://www.vpnmentor.com/reviews/vpnbook/#

"Although the company only has six servers and monetizes their service with ads, they still provide a stellar VPN service free of charge. However, there is no way to guarantee that they will not sell your information. Therefore, we recommend checking out our top VPNs for a more reliable service."

As with all free VPN services, they have to make money, so they collect, retain and sell user information. This is not what the word "Private" in VPN is about.

Best product key finders: How to find that missing software license for free

As more and more programs go to cloud-based digital entitlements, these products are less and less useful. Add to that the problem that after Office 2010 it became impossible for these products to find Office keys. So this is definitely a hit or miss type of utility now. Worth a shot, but by no means a guaranteed success.

Chrome Extensions Labelled Rogue

https://www.icebrg.io/blog/malicious-chrome-extensions-enable-criminals-to-impact-over-half-a-million-users-and-global-businesses

It appears the spread of these extensions was helped when popups demanded the extensions be installed before users could leave certain web pages. You can always kill a Chrome process with Task Manager and the Linux System Monitor. So you're never trapped into a forced install of anything you don't ask for.

Check Windows Updates with just two clicks using the Context Menu

So with all the other issues affecting Windows Updates lately, now someone suggests messing around inside the Windows Registry and adding what is essentially a Windows Shell Extension? What could possibly go wrong?

Tests Show Tiny PC Performance Hit From Meltdown, Spectre Fix

The key here is, what are "everyday tasks" and what other tasks are impacted, and by how much?

Why You Need a Trackball Mouse

I find these things pretty much useless. They do not fit the way I navigate a web page or a document or spreadsheet.

ANDROID USERS: TO AVOID MALWARE, TRY THE F-DROID APP STORE

If you want to put up with limited and unfinished apps which look terrible, have compatibility issues and are themselves not of proven origins, feel free to use this or any unofficial source fro Android apps. Open Source means anyone can mess with these apps and no one would be any the wiser. The label Open Source is anything but a guarantee of apps being malware free.

Intel: Spectre Patch Reboot Issue Affects Newer Chips, Too

I have a Skylake core-i5 in my Intel NUC. I installed all the latest firmware and Linux OS kernel patches, including the Intel Microcode Patch. So far, as far as I can tell, nothing bad has happened. I don't do the intensive kinds of tasks which would show any performance slowdowns, but I haven't noticed anything unusual in my everyday tasks. Your mileage may vary.

Elon Musk's Boring Co.["You certainly are!"] pitches plan to build a tunnel under Culver City to LA

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/elon-musk-apos-boring-co-165741953.html

I don't think I'd want to be caught napping on the job while wearing one of these. https://www.boringcompany.com/hat He capped sales at 50,000, which in Venture Cap terms is a Size [very, very] Small.

Seriously, if the tunnel ever gets dug, they'd better be prepared for earthquake issues. It would be running through one of the most active fault systems in California. Using San Francisco's tunnels as an example is not wise -- they have never been tested in a quake where ground displacements could be over 24 feet horizontal and 6 feet vertical in a matter of seconds. Culver City's issue is more vertical movements than horizontal, but nearly as severe.

To be fair, L.A does already have tunnels for its Metro and other systems, including the city's aqueducts for water supply. The Big One scenario for those aqueducts is enough to make me not want to live anywhere near L.A.

Exercises for computer users and office workers – Nerd Fitness

My exercises after sitting at the PC for a long time:

Get dressed to go outside. Walk down the front steps, up the sidewalk steps, and over to my car. Drive to Prospect Hill (482 feet high, from base elevation of less than 80 ft.). Walk up the two summits of Prospect Hill. Drive to the grocery store and shop for dinner. Drive back home and walk down the sidewalk steps and up my front steps. Get out of outdoors clothes and shower. Spend the evening watching TV. This usually cures me of the urge to exercise for a day or two.

What Is the Most Secure Mainstream Browser?

The two things which will make a real difference are: user behavior -- how you use a browser and where you let it take you is a far better predictor than pwn2own statistics; and which security modifications and extensions the user has implemented -- but beware, some combinations can actually make a browser less secure than no add-ons at all. Browser security is also tied to OS security, which deserves an article all its own. There have been a lot of misrepresentations in that category, too. If the user is browsing safely, any browser from this list will be plenty secure. If not, no browser will protect us. Even VPN privacy can be negated by using a VPN to visit social media sites, then posting indiscriminately.

My new Chromebook has the opposite problem -- two USB-C ports and no backwards-compatible ports. I had to spend extra $$ for a dock, just to make a Chrome Recovery Drive!

BTW, you will not be able to add the capabilities of USB-C to a motherboard which is not built with the internal interface for this type of port.  USB-C does a lot more than carrying data and charging.

Re. FYI#1147  (Fri 1/19/2018):

How to Stop the Meltdown and Spectre Patches from Slowing Down Your PC

I have to say, this article is heavy on the "upgrade, upgrade, upgrade" side of things. It should not be necessary to upgrade to Windows 10 to make the Registry changes and throw your system wide open to attacks. If you have one of the older Intel chips, you are damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Google Chrome extensions with 500,000 downloads found to be malicious

So how is it that people keep installing these extensions? Do people just go out and look for random extensions to add? There must be something like the web page fake alerts which try to prevent you from leaving the page without installing an extension. The article made no mention of this.

Application Control security feature in Windows Defender on Windows 10

This reads a lot like heuristics or crowdsourcing of security. Both of which cause more false positives which block legitimate applications than these protections are worth. As with any of these advanced security features, you have to choose Windows Defender as your only active antivirus program. This is not supported by the performance data from independent testing labs, which still rate WD as a poor choice. Application controls could be use to prevent the use of any app not downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Windows App Store. At present this does not appear to be the case, but unless this feature is user configurable, it could eventually have the effect of turning all Windows 10 installations into Windows 10S.

5 tools to supplement (or supplant) PowerPoint

This content requires registration just to read it. No thanks.

These 4 malicious Chrome extensions are infecting more than half a million users

I still don't understand why anyone would seek out an unknown and untested browser extension and then install it without even looking at reviews from tech pros.

How Windows Defender System Guard works on Windows 10

Again, you would have to run nothing but Windows Defender to use this. And in all likelihood, it would prevent booting another operating system in a dual-boot configuration. This would be the end of using Linux and Windows side by side. And Windows Defender is still one of the least effective antivirus programs out there.

Tim Cook: 'I don't want my nephew on a social network'

The article doesn't seem to give any details on the age of Cook's nephew, nor what exactly Cook means by "a social network". This random quote has no context, and is therefore almost impossible to evaluate.

Turn Leftover Oxycontin Into Safe-to-Dispose Garbage With This Free Powder

This is exactly the wrong approach to take. WalMart is dodging their role in distributing opioids. There is no such thing as safe pharmaceutical garbage or byproducts. CVS Pharmacies are promising to have in-store disposal boxes similar to those used by fire departments and police departments now. This would be a much better way to take back unwanted opioid prescriptions. Please do not dispose of narcotics in the garbage -- treated or not!

7 Places You Can Buy a Dedicated Linux PC or Laptop Online

From what I've seen recently, you'd be better off from a cost perspective just buying a good Windows PC or laptop and either dual-booting or replacing Windows with Linux. These places from the article are selling overpriced hardware.

Your headlights are about to get much smarter

The way many drivers are distracted already, do we really need more distractions projected fromour headlights? I don't think so.

Google moves to Debian for in-house Linux desktop

This information has zero impact on desktop Linux users, as it is not a distro made available to the public. BTW, with Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu is going to GNOME on Wayland for its GUI too.

Closest online free version of Photoshop

This may be a good web app, but remember that it is based on Flash, which is being phased out and may not be the best thing to have on a PC from a security point of view.

Kaspersky Lab Warns of Extremely Sophisticated Android Spyware Tool

Meltdown and Spectre Linux Kernel Status - Update

You'd be stupid to turn off Apple's iPhone performance limiter

Random shutdowns aren't the only issue with overstrained old Lithium Ion batteries. They can heat up dangerously and even catch fire or explode. Just get the battery replaced, already.

A sneaky extension for Chrome, Firefox prevents its removal, hijacks browser

In Windows, the Task Manager can kill almost any open program and its processes. In Linux there's System Monitor, which is similar. There are in fact more than six ways to kill a program or process in Linux:

https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-different-ways-to-end-unresponsive-programs-in-linux/

Windows has a few lesser-known ways as well. Main point is -- you are never forced to install an extension or perform any sort of "update" to terminate a web page or end a session in any browser.

Yahoo Finance launches social savings app Tanda, an alternative to credit cards

You'd sure better be able to trust the people you enter into this relationship with! This in no way replaces credit cards or bank accounts, or personal saving for a goal.

How to See Which Groups Your Linux User Account Belongs To

Occasionally I've had to add myself to Groups in Linux. Not often, but for some specific tasks, this is something which Linux users need to look into, much more likely than for Windows users.

New ransomware strain attacks your cloud email

It's still triggered as a phishing attack, and relies on users clicking on something to make the process start.

Tips and Tricks for Ubuntu after Installation [Ubuntu 16.04.1]

This is a very nice collection of things which can make Ubuntu more useable. I'd be looking forward to an update for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS when it comes out.
